Sylvain Debaisieux

Sylvain Debaisieux (°1993, Brussels) is a saxophonist and improviser in constant search of new sounds and new ways of expression on his instrument.

Sound, flow, energy and rhythm are central to his playing, which he develops and experiments with in various Belgium-based groups, including Pentadox, Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters, Lynn Cassiers Imaginary Band, Hélène Duret ‘Synestet‘, among others.
After studying with John Ruocco and Jeroen Van Herzeele at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and obtaining his Master’s degree with great distinction, Sylvain Debaisieux received a scholarship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F) which allowed him to study at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York for a year and to follow courses with renowned musicians and teachers such as Ellery Eskelin, Mark Shim, Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, Ingrid Laubrock, etc.
In 2012, he represented Belgium in the “European Saxophone Ensemble“, a project led by the French saxophonist Guillaume Orti, with whom he performed in more than ten European countries.

Since 2014, he has participated in the recording of albums, including Eve Beuvens’ ‘Heptatomic’ (2015, Igloo label), Lynn Cassiers’ ‘Imaginary Band’ (2018, Clean Feed), Stéphane Galland & The Mystery of KEM (2018, Outnote records), Pentadox – Between (2018, Auto-prod. ), Fragments of Expansion (2020, WERF), The Workshop – In and Out (2021, Onze heures Onze) and performs regularly in the most prestigious venues in Belgium: Bozar, Flagey, Handelsbeurs, CC Nona, Concertgebouw Brugge, etc.

He is a laureate of the Horlait-Dapsens foundation in 2016 and wins the Jong Jazz Talent Gent 2018 with the band Pentadox. They were also finalists at the Avignon Jazz Springboard in 2020 and performed at the Belgian Jazz Meeting in 2022.
In 2023 he received a grant from the Flemish community to be in artist in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris for a period of three months.
