Shakespeare Revisited is a contemporary and deeply personal album in which Caroll Vanwelden gives new musical life to the timeless sonnets of William Shakespeare.
As a singer, pianist and composer, Caroll begins with the emotions hidden within the texts. Love, desire, doubt, beauty, loss and the passing of time are transformed into songs that feel immediate, recognisable and connected to the present. Rather than treating Shakespeare as distant or historical, she allows his words to speak directly to today’s listener.
Compared with her earlier Shakespeare albums, the music is more intimate, transparent and modern. Jazz remains an important foundation, but it is combined with art pop, chamber music colours and subtle electronics. Voice, piano, keyboards and cello create a delicate and cinematic sound world in which every word, note and silence carries emotional weight.
Caroll Vanwelden is joined by Dominique Vantomme on keyboards and electronics and Jean-François Assy on cello and electronics. The unusual instrumentation gives the music a distinctive character, moving naturally between vulnerability, rhythm, lyrical beauty and dramatic intensity.
All compositions were written by Caroll Vanwelden. Shakespeare Revisited continues her long artistic relationship with Shakespeare while opening a new and more personal musical chapter.
This playlist gathers the songs from the album and invites listeners to rediscover Shakespeare through contemporary music.
Perfect for listeners who enjoy vocal jazz, art pop, poetic songwriting, cinematic soundscapes and adventurous encounters between literature and music.
