Alexandre Furnelle

Alexandre Furnelle, born in Congo where he lived until the age of 6, was attracted to music at a very young age. He made his debut on the electric bass and at the age of twenty he discovered jazz and the double bass.
Self-taught, he deepened his musical research through an academic course in double bass and classical harmony, jazz harmony and double bass lessons, singing lessons, rhythm training and more recently viola da gamba.
He is interested in sound as a raw material, which led him to study the possibilities of the most primitive instruments.

Passionate about music, he was interested in the evolution of Western music from the troubadours to the present day but also in world music (more particularly Africa and the “Arab” world). However, his personal musical universe places him in the movement of European jazzmen who highlight the work of space and sound.

Since 1979, he has worked with musicians of all styles: jazz, song, music from Eastern countries, Oriental, etc.

Among others: the gypsy guitarist Fapi Lafertin, jazzmen like Peter Hertmans, Erwin Vann, Daniel Stokart, Jan de Haas, Barbara Wiernik, but also with musicians with a less typical background such as Marie Sophie Talbot (between jazz and song), Cécile Paperback (free improvisation, electro-acoustic music, jazz), the viellist Stevie Wishart (improvisation), and musicians of non-European cultural origin such as the Berber singer Khalid Izri, Moufadhel Adhoum,...

He is a member of various groups including O'Tchalaï (Eastern European music), Alwane, OST 'tet, has participated both as a double bassist and as a composer in various theatrical shows.

He has several CDs to his credit, the most recent with the Kaléïdoscopes ensemble which he initiated with Daniel Stokart
