Jazz&mo' #33 - ANTWERPEN

The autumn edition of Jazz&mo’ takes us to Antwerp. We let ourselves be carried away by the swing of the Scheldt and hear the jams echoing between the facades of 't Eilandje and the Cathedral. Femke Vanpoucke, general and artistic coordinator of Rataplan, knows the Antwerp jazz scene like the back of her hand and is therefore guest editor-in-chief.

On the cover: the versatile American musician Jon Birdsong followed love to Antwerp. Through Tarmacadam and Zonzo Compagnie, Antwerp children and young people are introduced to jazz. Els Smedts has been the head of the jazz department of the Antwerp Conservatory for eighteen years. Joachim Badenhorst, Nabou Claerhout and Tsubasa Hori talk about the special Youran project. We pass by iconic venues such as De Muze, Dropa House and Jazz Middelheim. Antwerp's city poet Esohe Weyden wrote a dialogue of hope. And after last year's Ghent jazz plan, this time we map out all the jazz venues in Antwerp.

And furthermore: The Sam Hinnekens Quintet is young and awesome. Jeff Schlanger is the cover artist on duty. Lander Lenaerts brings an exclusive preview of Mon Devoghelaere's jazz logs. Maarten Weyler engages in introspection. We check out the Antwerp label Rotkat Records. Leon Lhoëst talks about multi-instrumentalist Clare Fischer. We highlight the reviewers' top five. Tutu Puoane collaborates with the Metropole Orchestra for Wrapped in Rhythm Vol 2. And we say goodbye to Mark Lefever.
