Jazz&mo' #25 - Hit me

This Jazz&mo' fuels the passion for percussion and the drive to drum. The issue breathes to the rhythms of the musicians who are most often in the shadows. We are happy to bring their beats to the front and, for once, wholeheartedly endorse the cliché: a band is only as good as its drummer.

On the cover: Anke Verslype, who became the brand-new winner of Jong Jazztalent 2023 at Gent Jazz with her band aki. Percussion pioneer Chris Joris celebrates with W.E.R.F. Records and Jazzlab and that includes no less than two albums. For once, drummers Giovanni Barcella, Jan De Haas, Gert-Jan Dreessen and Karen Willems do not put themselves behind the drum kit for the occasion, but rather around the table. We take a look inside Lignum Drums, the studio of drum builder Gert Breugelmans. Thanks to Schroothoop, we now know what bricophony is. And the B-Jazz International Contest final was génial.

And further: we asked six questions to four drummers: Lander Gyselinck, Elias Devoldere, Isolde Lasoen and Dré Pallemaerts. Maarten fights for diversity and inclusion. We look inside drummer Sebastiaan Vekeman's record cabinet and quirky brain. Immanuel Wilkins is young & amazing. Nicolas Chkifi provides the drum break and Patrick Auwelaert discusses another cover artist. Leon Lhoëst delves into M-Base. We serve up five reviews you didn't read online yet. And Echoes of Zoo gives the animal kingdom a voice on their new album.
