Alexandre Furnelle Quintet
Alexandre Furnelle's music, interpreted by his quintet - with additional strings on a number of tracks - opens the door to a unique and magical world - where improvisation and composition come together, where discovery rhymes with emotions and dancing energy.
Since his first CD came out ("Le chant des Sirènes" mogno j013) - to high acclaim - which led to his group being invited to play many concerts - Alexandre Furnelle has added to his original quartet to form a quintet with musicians whose reputations are solidly established: Daniel Stokart (soprano saxophone, flutes) Barbara Wiernik (vocals) Peter Hertmans (guitar) Jan de Haas (drums, percussion), and himself (bass). Erwin Vann (tenor saxophone) is occasionally a guest performer.
In "Views of Xela", the leader's compositions, which have now grown in a more formal and polyphonic direction, open the door to a unique and magical world, where improvisation and composition come together, where discovery rhymes with emotions and dancing energy. The search for space and unity of sound and the desire to share roles equally are of paramount importance.
On the boundary between composition and improvisation, the music is very open, both harmonically and rhythmically. It allows great freedom of interpretation and creativity for all the soloists.
On some of the tracks, the appearance of "4Strings", another of Alexandre's projects, where he is joined by Hélène Lieben and Marielle Vancamp on violin and Anja Naucler on cello, brings an added dimension to the written music, and creates, via the warmth of the strings, glorious flights of sound.
