From 2020-2023 she worked as a reseacher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium). Together with Katrien Van Opstal she researched the ins and outs of jazz vocal technique. That research resulted in the release of their book “Vocal Jazz Technique - the mixing table model” (2023). More details to be found on the publisher's website Auurk.
In May 2026, Vanessa releases her new album The Secret Vault with the Vanessa Matthys Quartet, featuring their much-admired blend of contemporary jazz, traditionals, and timeless pop classics, all wrapped in a distinctive jazz aesthetic. With Dominique Vantomme on piano, Werner Lauscher on bass, and Geert Roelofs on drums, she brings together an international quartet (BE/D/NL) in which the voice takes centre stage in a way that is truly unique in Belgium. There is room for storytelling and captivating melodies, as well as for virtuosic themes and improvisation. Vocal jazz where lyricism and improvisation go hand in hand—rooted in the jazz tradition, yet reaching out toward the sonic worlds of E.S.T., Gretchen Parlato, and Kurt Elling. Intimate and refined, yet powerful and spirited.
