Philippe Laloy

A Belgian flutist and saxophonist born in Brussels in 1969, Philippe Laloy has been developing a rich musical career for over twenty-five years, at the crossroads of jazz, traditional music, and contemporary creations. A versatile instrumentalist (transverse, alto, and bass flutes; soprano and alto saxophones), he is also a renowned composer, arranger, and teacher.

Trained at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the jazz department, where he won first prize in saxophone and jazz flute in Steve Houben's class in 1996, he enriched his career by studying improvisation and harmony with Nathalie Loriers and Pierre Van Dormael, as well as furthering his studies at the University of Lethbridge (Canada). Alongside his musical studies, he holds a degree in sociology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

His artistic curiosity has led him to explore many different fields: jazz piano with Natalie Loriers, Latin American percussion with Oswaldo Hernandez, frame drums with Glenn Velez and Zohar Fresco, Konnakol with BC Manjunath, and more.

As a teacher, Philippe Laloy has been teaching the flute, saxophone, jazz ensemble, improvisation, and world rhythms for over twenty years. He has been a teacher at the Arthur De Greef Academy in Saint-Gilles since 2014 and at Saint John's International School in Waterloo since 2001. He has also taught at the International School of Brussels and the SAE Institute in Brussels, and has led and workshops in Belgium.

On stage, he has been involved in numerous projects and collaborations. A founding member, alongside Vincent Noiret, of the trio Traces, he has also been part of the long-running adventure that is the group Tricycle since 2000, alongside Tuur Florizoone and Vincent Noiret. The group has received international acclaim and has performed on numerous stages in Europe, Canada, Brazil, and China. He is also involved in projects such as Zefiro Torna (notably the production Balsam), Heptone Colours, Marie-Sophie Talbot Quartet, and Waste Ground Project.

Since 2015, he has been a member of Vibrations, an ensemble of seven flutists who explore a repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary creations and jazz. This unique project, driven by sound research and a wealth of original arrangements, has resulted in several recordings and affirms a demanding and innovative collective approach to the flute.

Always driven by a taste for fusion, in 2012 he founded the group Kind of Pink, an original reinterpretation of the world of Pink Floyd, and collaborated for several years with the Karim Baggili Sextet, exploring the bridges between flamenco and Eastern music. He has also played or recorded alongside many major figures on the Belgian scene, including Maurane, Marka, Philippe Catherine, Victor Da Costa, Didier Laloy, the group Tangram, and the singer Geneviève Laloy, with whom he shared the stage for many years and for whom he produced arrangements and recordings of several of his albums.

A prolific composer, Philippe Laloy writes for theater, young audiences, and documentaries. He has composed the music for several shows and written some sixty educational songs published by Van In. His work as an arranger and performer is documented by an extensive discography spanning more than twenty-five years of creativity.

Throughout his career, Philippe Laloy has asserted an open, sensitive musical identity deeply rooted in the dialogue between styles, cultures, and generations.
