Sébastien Hugue

Sébastien Hugue is both an electric and an acoustic bass player. Born in France in 1996, he started to play the bass at the age of thirdteen.

He first practiced rock n’ roll music in Dijon, his hometown in France where he met Michel Thévenard, a bass teacher that taught him a « proper » technique to play the electric bass. Within this program of three years, he discovered Jaco Pastorius, Mark King, Richard Bona, Cliff Burton (first bass player of Metallica) and his taste was of course mainly orientated into rock and metal music.

In the meantime in highschool, he started a rock/fusion band called Muphin. In this band, we saw a few musicians that are continuing their studies and musicial travels. Among them : a jazz drummer called Emilian Ducret, now in Paris. They played a lot together in a brass band called Ze Tribu Brass Band that is managed by Zutique Production in Dijon.

In 2014, he started to study at the university and to learn the double-bass at the « Conservatoire Régional de Dijon ». After being quiet disappointed with the university and the lessons that he had in Dijon at the conservatory, he decided to move to Chalon-sur-saône (a southern city in Burgundy, one hour away from Dijon).

It is in Chalon-sur-saône that he really started to practice double-bass seriously and followed the lessons from Michel Martin-Charrières that introduced him to the New york modern jazz scene. They listened together to a lot of great jazz artists such as Gilad Hekselman, Reuben Rogers, Robert Hurst, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Garzone and of course Branford and Wynton Marsalis. But the list is non-exhaustive…

Sébastien continued to go back to Dijon to rehearse with Muphin and they released an EP in 2015. During his studies in Chalon between 2015 and 2019, he started to play with his trio Jazz by

three (with Victor Prost on drums and Tom Juvigny on the electric guitar) in weddings, concerts and other events around Burgundy and the Great East of France.

He also played and still play with All you need is swing, a swing band specialized in dance music from the 1930’s.

In April 2016, the band Muphin splitted an he started a collaboration with Filansen, a french singer from Burgundy with whom he recorded an album called « Issue de Secours » released in June 2017 and toured in the summer.

In 2017 after the tour, he decided to take a more jazz-orientated turn and stopped to be a sideman with Filansen. He created his quintet SH Group with who he toured in April 2019 in Burgundy and recorded his first EP (in June) that was released in March 2020.

2019 was also the year when Sébastien entered at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel after being graduated of a « Diplôme d’Etudes Musicales » in Chalon-sur-saône. He moved to live in Belgium and still study at this school.

In his new land, he started to play with Thomas Sagne trio and other bands like Qelder but also a rockband called La Poudre. In 2020 and 2021 during the coronacrisis, Rob Swennen, a friend from conservatory, decided to create EVIGS where the low frequencies are assumed by Sébastien Hugue on the electric bass. EVIGS is an amplified jazz ensemble that is both influenced by hip-hop, jazz and rock.

In 2023, He obtains his Bachelor Diploma at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.

After spending an Erasmus year in HfMT in Cologne, in April 2024, he has recorded a new album with SH Group, willing to release it in 2025.
