"...This new kind of Real Book does not aim to replace the basic volumes, but rather to complement and enrich them. Knowledge of tradition (and therefore of standards in the broadest sense of the term) remains, in my opinion, essential to any coherent practice of jazz. But the time for fundamentalism is over, and if we can now, on record or in a jam session, combine a melody by Jimmy Van Heusen with one of the compositions now available to the public thanks to this volume, jazz will be all the better for it.

And if jazz is doing better, I want to believe that the decaying world we know will also regain some of its color! "
