Fields of Color is a vibrant musical tribute to painter Mark Rothko, a key figure of Abstract Expressionism. Inspired by the emotional universe of Rothko, Belgian saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande — who is himself color-blind — created this project as a way to transcend visual perception by interpreting Rothko’s iconic work through contemporary jazz. Fields of Color is his response to Rothko's artistic philosophy:

“I became a painter because I wanted to raise painting to the level of poignancy of music and poetry.” - M. Rothko

This intriguing project not only showcases Matthias Van den Brande's award-winning trio but also welcomes the acclaimed Belgian trumpeter Jean-Paul Estiévenart, who adds an extra dimension of expressiveness and virtuosity to the musical exploration. Together, they create a symphony of colors and sounds, where each note is a brushstroke on the canvas of the imagination.

“Belgian jazz at the highest level” **** - De Standaard (BE)

“This is a major step forward in Van den Brande's already brilliant career" **** - All About Jazz (USA)

“It is pulsating, powerful, exciting, captivating. A pure joy to listen to.” **** - Le Soir (BE)

“Van den Brande's songs sound like warm poetic scenes.” – Jazzenzo (NL)
