KAAP @ Sint-Janshospitaal (zolder)

Approximately 12 metres wide and no less than 42 metres long: these are the dimensions of this hall. The wood was felled around 1230, so we know that this roof is the oldest of its kind in the Benelux! 

An attic served as the hospital's storeroom. And it had another surprising function: thanks to clever ventilation, the unhealthy air from the wards rose from the bottom to the top, to this and other attic rooms, where it escaped outside. In this way, hygiene was more or less maintained.

Apart from this large attic, there was another smaller one. This is where the nuns lived before the convent was built.
