Just over a year ago, jazz bassist Chris Mentens released a solo album: XMNTNS. It is an album centred around double bass, compositions and improvisations. Using loop stations, analogue effects and live electronics, a rich soundscape is created. With jazz as its starting point, atmospheres are evoked that are reminiscent of soundscapes from ambient or minimal music.
It has a very cinematic feel without losing sight of its jazz roots: improvisation remains a key element. In doing so, he ventures beyond the usual paths along which we normally encounter Chris Mentens as a jazz bassist in jazz clubs across the country, allowing us to hear a different side to the double bass.
