Wajdi Riahi Trio

As part of the 7th edition of the Confluent jazz festival at the Delta. Essia, the new album by Wajdi Riahi trio, is a delicate mesh of fabrics, bright, supple but also thick: a craftsman's work, both subtle and robust. Wajdi's lyricism is revealed in each track, each of which is a singular little ecosystem. Ultimately, they form a coherent whole, like a collection of short stories.

If the first album, Mhamdeya, is imbued with nostalgia, this second opus tells of a journey between the pianist's two horizons: Tunis and Brussels. Stambeli and Gnawa music are an integral part of the Essia album. The organic architecture of these African and North African rhythms merges with the complex, dense fabric of jazz.

The trio is at once virtuosic and poetic, touching the ground and the heavens in a single movement. Pierre Hurty's drums stand out for their precision and dynamism, navigating with the assurance and serenity typical of outstanding rhythmicists. Basile Rahola's double bass, with its reassuring sound reminiscent of Charlie Haden, also surprises us with the finesse of the suspended moments of its chosen silences.
