Pierre de Surgères

Born in 1973 and grown up in Brussels, Pierre de Surgères learned the basics of music as an autodidact. As a teenager, he discovered the guitar and jazz harmony. After studying journalism and philosophy he turns to the piano at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. He studied Jazz Piano and graduated in 2006. As teachers he had Diederick Wissels, Nathalie Loriers, Kris Defoort, ... He has attended masterclasses with Anthony Braxton, Bert Joris, Toots Thielemans, Garrett List and Stéphane Galland. The lessons with John Taylor will strongly influence his playing.

In 2003 he launched a project dedicated to the music of Gainsbourg, "Visite à Gainsbourg". Then he took part in several projects of contemporary jazz, Ou-cours-je and Babylon. In early 2007, he worked in Florida and the Caribbean where he played jazz, funk and Carribean music concerts. During this period he took place in jam sessions and he met many musicians, including Jonathan Butler, George Duke and Markus Miller.

Another turning point will be his short stay in New York in 2008 where he had the opportunity to meet he Americam jazz avant-garde such as Tim Berne, Jim Black, Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey. Back to Belgium, he formed the quintet Improvising Gang, (with Bo Van der Werf, Dré Pallemaerts, Alexandra Grimal) who plays his compositions with influences of traditional jazz, free, on M-base, new music.

In 2009, he participated in independent film projects and wrote several movie soundtracks. Currently, he devoted himself to his trio. After a first album praised by the press("Krysis"), the band toured in some of the major festivals in Belgium and abroad. A new repertoire has been recorded and a second album comes out in 2017.
