André Charlier

André Charlier, born in Verviers (B), starts drumming in 1978. Studies at the Jazz Seminar in Liège during 1979 and 1980.
At the Musician Institute in Los Angeles during 1985-86 with Ralph HUMPHREY, Steve HOUGTON, Joe PORCARO...

Participates in numerous bands alongside Steve HOUBEN, Michel HERR, Guy CABAY, Philip CATHERINE... (1986 - 1989).

Accompanies the singer MAURANE 1989 - 1991.

Plays in the ORJL Big Band (leader Barry ALTCHUL) and François MECHALI in 1991-1992 and Christian JACOB in 1992-1993. Appears with Christian JACOB (pianist of Maynard Ferguson). Appearance at Festival de Vittel with Scott HENDERSON (1992).

He becomes more and more active on the French scene, and gets hired by French violinist Didier LOCKWOOD. He played extensively with him and appears on the CD "Round about Silence" ('98) (Dreyfus FDM 36595-2).

1994 : his main activities are divided between

  • IN FOLIO, with Eric SEVA (sax), Benoît SOURISSE (kb), Marc Michel LEBEVILLON (bass). The group recorded 2 CDs.
  • the Didier LOCKWOOD Quintet or Trio
  • the ONZTET de violons.

In '98, he tours in trio with CHARLIER/ALLEMAN/SOURISSE.

In 2001, with French keyboard player Benoît SOURISSE, he releases the album Gemini (Dreyfus FDM 36621-2).

André CHARLIER currently lives in France.

Teacher at CMCN in Nancy since 1990 and during different workshops at Conservatoire Royal de Lyon, in Malmédy, Vittel, Spa, etc.
