Arnould Massart

Arnould Massart

Difficult to define this polyvalent searcher musician who evolved through various areas of music and different styles such as jazz, contemporary music, and pop music, alternating as composer, interpreter, musical director, pedagog, pianist and improviser.

Born in Brussels, October 7 1956, Arnould MASSART studied music following classical direction and as a self taught. Being gifted for languages, in 1978 he graduates with a university degree in Germanic philology. His musical curiosity and taste for research ever keep him in a dynamic learning process: He pursues his musical studies, in analysis and composition, in London, Mons Royal Conservatory, and with Mauricio KAGEL and Luciano BERIO.
In 1989 he participated, as a synthesizer soloist, in the creation of "Déclarations d'Orage" by Henri POUSSEUR and Michel BUTOR with the Liège Philharmonic orchestra.

Where jazz is concerned, founded a trio "Three to Get Ready" with which he performed since 1983 and which resulted in first album in 1985, with bassist Philippe AERTS and drummer Philippe MOBERS. The album has been reissued on CD in 2002 (Igloo igl 166). He also collaborated with Charles LOOS in his album "HARMONIE DU SOIR", in 1988 (Igloo).

He signed many arrangements for different groups and participated in many recordings.

In 1985 he was awarded the SABAM prize for his work, for big band, "Lifestrings".

In 1988 he is the winner of the international jazz competition of the public French speaking radios (C.R.P.L.F.).

1991 sees his composition "AVOGADRO" a large composition for a group of 10, a concert concept where the big band discipline controls the inventiveness of each member. Another occasion to sample his particular sense for writing. Let's also mention that he received commissions to write for ACT Big Band and the BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA, as well as for the contemporary music ensemble ICTUS and the "Silent Movies II" concert.

In the area of Chanson Française, he performed alongside MAURANE who referred to him as her "preferred symphony orchestra".
A great number of singers are calling on him for compositions, arrangements and accompanying and to direct studio recordings.
His great creativity, sense for refinement, open conception of music and sense of humour render him a highly appreciated collaborator.

He also recorded a solo CD, live at the Travers (Igloo).

Aside his musical activities there are also teaching ones.
His specialization is in the field of rhythmics and jazz harmony, subject about which he is writing.

Currently he teaches at the Brussels Royal Conservatory and gives workshops, on different occasions, on the subject of rhythm.
