Bart Defoort






Born in a musical family.(His father a classical musician, his brother Kris Defoort, Jazz composer and pianist).

Bart Defoort studied at the Brussels Conservatories with Steve Houben and attended masterclasses with John Ruocco, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland.

Between 1982 -86 he played in some music-theatre pieces and avant-garde projects like Blindman Sax Quartet, Fred Van Hove WIM orchestra, while studying at Brussels Conservatory and attending lots of jam sessions.


Groups:

  • 1990-93: "K.D.'s Basement Party ": with Kris Defoort, F.Cassol, M.Massot, Michel Hatzigeourgiou, Stéphane Galland. Concerts in Belgium and France. CD.
  • 1992-2000: "Octurn" : founder with Bo Van der Werf, Jeroen Van Herzeele….Concerts in Belgium(Middelheim, Liege,…), France, U.S.A. and Canada. 3 CD's.
  • 1993-today : "Brussels Jazz Orchestra"; member from the start. Numerous concerts with Maria Schneider, Toots Thielemans, Bob Mintzer, Bert Joris, Dave Liebman, Philip Catherine, Bill Holman,Tom Harrell, Norma Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Kenny Werner, David Linx, Michel Herr…
    Concerts in Benelux, France, Spain, U.S.A., etc... Many CD's. He appears on the 9 albums of the band.
  • 1996-98: "Bart Defoort Quartet" with Erik Vermeulen, Nic Thys, Gene Calderazzo. Concerts at Belgian Festivals (Middelheim,Gaume,..) and jazzclubs and centers. CD "Moving".
  • 1999-2001: "STREAMS" with Diederik Wissels, Stefan Lievestro, Lieven Venken. Concerts in Belgium and France. 1 CD.
  • 2002-still continuing: "Bart Defoort Quartet" with Hans Van Oost, Bart De Nolf, Jan De Haas. Concerts in Belgium (festival Liege,Lundis,…).
    CD "The Lizard Game".
  • Bart Quartier Quintet (1 CD)
  • He also formed a quintet with the Italian tenor sax player Emanuele Cisi.

    Sideman:

    As a sideman, Bart has worked and/or still works with Richard Rousselet , Chris Joris, Ernst Vranckx, Olivier Collette, Bart Quartier, Mimi Verderame, Marnix Busstra, Carlo Morena, etc…

    He has been invited in 1996 to play some concerts in India (Bombay) with Amit Heri, Ramamani and the Karnataka College of Percussion. Contemporary classical music to free improvisation
