Appeltuinjazz: Into a Night’s Echo Ramon Van Merkenstein

Into a Night’s Echo is a Brussels-based quintet led by bassist and composer Ramon van Merkenstein. They play contemporary acoustic jazz, composed and performed as a suite. The music moves like something half-remembered: layered, shifting, and non-linear—like a series of dreams. Motifs recur in altered forms, grooves evolve and dissolve, and improvisation shapes the music from within. At its core lies a rhythm section that pulls the listener along like an undertow—hovering between groove and trance, patient and irresistible. Above this current, a two-piece horn section traces the music's shifting contours as they unfold.

Ramon van Merkenstein: double bass & composition

Matthias Van den Brande: tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone & flute

Elly Brouckmans: alto saxophone & flute

Josaphat Hounnou: drums

Thomas Rivera: piano
