From its very beginnings, jazz has been disparaged and then censored by ‘musical authorities’ and by the authorities in general, particularly by dictatorships and powerful regimes in both the United States and Europe. The period of the occupation in Belgium, the way in which dance and jazz were blacklisted, and the reasons behind this censorship provide a particularly interesting case study. In the interests of freedom of expression and artistic freedom, let us examine censorship in the contemporary music world.
