Careless Territories is the result of several factors. One of them is my recent encounter with Belgian trombonist Phil Abraham, a true phenomenon, in 2022. This helped define the project's guiding principle and aesthetic direction, as Phil and I are both big fans of the Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer quintet. Another factor is the recent nostalgic musical reflection I had on certain past trips. For example, the title track “Careless Territories” was written during a family trip to Puglia in southern Italy. “Sunflower Eyes” is the direct result of a romantic and memorable weekend in Amsterdam. “Close by” was born after a surprise stop in the rain in Barcelona.
Last but not least, “Careless Territories” is a sincere desire to expose a somewhat multifaceted personal musical landscape, and probably the result of a few years spent as an arranger for big bands. For me, variety is a source of pleasure and enrichment. That said, between the swing pieces and songwriting, as well as longer, more elaborate pieces, this album could only have come about thanks to the musical appetite and curiosity of an exciting multigenerational group. The quintet is made up of young lions and classmates from my university years at Berklee and the Manhattan School, as well as experienced talents from the Belgian and French scenes.
I think fire meets wisdom in this album, and I like to think that this can only benefit the balance and entertainment value. Overall, I hope it brings as much joy to listen to as we had creating it.
