Following the release of In a little Provincial Town, dedicated to Liège composers, and the project's positive reviews, the adventure continues with a new repertoire still devoted to world-renowned Liège musicians. These will be joined by foreign musicians and composers who have influenced jazz in Liège.
As early as the 60s, many jazz musicians were already visiting the city of Liège, some even staying for longer periods.
It was in the 1980s that Henri Pousseur, then director of the Conservatoire Royal de Liège, put them in the spotlight by creating “Le séminaire de jazz” and an improvisation class taught by Karl Berger, Steve Lacy and Garrett List, who headed the class for some twenty years. This initiative gave rise to a veritable craze in Liège for this discipline, and served as a wake-up call for other jazz musicians.
Our new project, a sequel to In a Little Provincial Town, highlights this 2nd period of Liège jazz, with a selection of influential musicians from Liège and abroad, all of whom played in the city. The repertoire features pieces by René Thomas, Bobby Jaspar, Jean Lerusse, Bill Frisell, Dennis Luxion, Serge Lazarevitch, Art Taylor, Karl Berger, Chet Baker and Jon Eardley. Names to revive and rediscover.
