The idea behind the project is to take themes from historical (retro !) video games and give them a jazz or even free jazz twist, using Ornette Coleman’s harmolodic approach.
Fascinated by the inventiveness of these electronic ritornellos that linger in the mind without ever becoming tiresome, Casimir now takes his ReTRio into atypical live acoustic jazz, constantly evolving, reinterpreting video game themes that interweave with improvisations to give way to a very singular jazz flow, with varied registers and, ultimately, very contemporary.
An insatiable jack-of-all-trades, a bulimic heir to his ‘gods’ Monk, Coltrane, Miles Davis, and so many other divinities of the gigantic repertoire of baroque, classical, modern, jazz and contemporary music, Casimir is also an obsessive tinkerer with vintage analogue synthesizers. ‘A lifetime won’t be enough to quench my thirst for music,’ he says (smiling).
"The music that results from my creative processes is, I think, often “intense”. It’s a concentration of many elements at once. I’d like it to be both simple and complex, uncomplicated and mysterious. I think it should always be honest about who I am. "Knowledgeable without being academic and accessible without being too racy.
During my childhood, I developed an initial self-taught knowledge of blues, rock, boogie and funk. Then, thanks to various teachers and some of the great masters I met, I became more ‘educated’ (jazz, classical). I’m still passionate about the science of music (harmony, rhythm, theory, sound synthesis and production, and the history of music) - which I was from a very early age. Above all, I have always been an inveterate music fan.
