Lakecia Benjamin

Lakecia Benjamin

Phoenix is the eagerly-awaited new album from long-awaited alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, featuring mainly original compositions written over the seasons, and is a very personal album, written during the pandemic with the feeling that, like a phoenix, we too will rise from our ashes.
Lakecia Benjamin is a 3-time GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist, arranger, composer and educator based in New York. Her music offers a unique blend of R&B, various jazz styles and funk. Her warm, resonant tone, comparable to that of Johnny Griffin, lends itself to any form of music she chooses to play. In addition to honing her skills with Clark Terry and later Terri Lyne Carrington, she is also a renowned accompanist to singers and musicians, including Gregory Porter, Stevie Wonder and Theo Crocker. When Lakecia Benjamin released her debut album "Retox" in 2012, the jazz world was unanimous: it was a masterpiece of promising jazz talent. Yet it took six years for her follow-up album, "Rise Up", to see the light of day. His latest opus is not just an ode to heroes such as the artist Basquiat, jazz legend John Coltrane or Wayne Shorter, his favorite musician, who died earlier this year. The first appearance in Liège of a saxophonist of this stature is not to be missed!
