Lady Blackbird

Lady Blackbird

Some musicians reach for your soul, like Nina Simone. So does Lady Blackbird, named after the iconic "Blackbird" Nina Simone wrote in 1963, at the height of the black civil rights movement. The (amazing!) version of Lady Blackbird, by a whimsical twist of fate, was released only two days after George Floyd's death. Coincidence or an omen? Even though she is a proud representative of the black and LGBTQ+ communities, she is foremost an entertainer, rather than a symbol for the civil rights movement.
