"Ear of the Dragon" is the result of a collaboration between saxophonist and bass clarinetist Toine Thys and Japanese double bassist Motoi Kanamori. A deep connection, cemented by shared sincerity and rigorous precision of execution, has been established between the two musicians beyond borders and cultures.

Toine Thys’s musical world is distinguished as much by his strong artistic personality as by his desire to explore soundscapes shaped by diverse geographical and cultural influences. Following his meeting in 2024 with Japanese double bassist Motoi Kanamori, the duo decided to join forces to present a repertoire of original compositions. To bring this new ensemble to life, Toine Thys and Motoi Kanamori.

Het album gaat verder met het meer ritmische ‘Fake It Till You Make It’, het melodieuze ‘D.I.Y. The Viking and the Samurai’.otoi Kanamori called upon the elite of the new generation of Belgian jazz: on piano, the prodigy Wajdi Riahi brings a recognized harmonic richness and inventiveness that have already won over audiences in both solo and ensemble performances. On drums, Portuguese drummer Diogo Alexandre is unanimously praised for his intensity and musicality. The album opens with “Incognito,” a track that certainly doesn’t go unnoticed—thanks in large part to pianist Wajdi Riahi’s nimble solo—followed by one of his compositions, “Dreams Come True,” and his reinterpretation, “Same Idea.” The album continues with the more rhythmic “Fake It Till You Make It,” the melodic “D.I.Y. Lover,” and finally the lyrical “Ear of the Dragon.” After one final composition by the saxophonist, “Cairo Taxi Night Ride,” the Japanese double bassist contributes two compositions: “Eyes in the Sky” and “The Viking and the Samurai.”
