We had one gig which was the first time we played all together and i booked a studio for the day after. The idea behind IN THE LAND OF… was to tell short stories or paint postcards, partially inspired by Murakami’s short stories. I chose compositions which I thought had a strong personality and offered the sense of space and calmness I had envisioned. The day in the studio was challenging but also effortless at the same time. The rooms were cold when we got there and they warmed up only in the late afternoon. It was a cold day, but a good one.
Looking back now I understand that my need for a certain calmness in the time before our record date was a result of my personal situation back then when I was forced to start facing the fact of a terminal illness in my close family. Now that the illness has taken away who it came for, this record has revealed itself and speaks to me on a different level. I visited a Paul Delvaux exhibition recently, two comments stayed with me on that day: "death makes life meaningful” and "death is the essence of truth”. Later that evening I was informed of the passing in the family. Life sounds different after…
