Continuing his exploration of elliptical and dreamlike musical forms initiated with "Roturière Acide" (2024), composer and improviser Théo Zipper presents a new suite that further deepens his adventurous sonic language through the musical allegory of magic rituals.
« As a committed atheist and rational thinker, I remain (perhaps paradoxically) drawn to the world of esoteric rituals. From North African Gnawa ceremonies to Pakistani Qawwali, Haitian Vodou, these spiritual practices have long fed my imagination, both as an artist and as a human being. In recent years, I turned my attention to the fragmented remains of Europe’s own mystical heritage: witchcraft, druidic rites, demonology, occultism, and eventually even Satanism. Throughout the ages, the humankind looked up for transcendence. Many of these beliefs and traditions started as cults, but often became acts of rebellion, responses to the grip of the religious and state authority. The heart of this work is inspired by the symbolic charge behind these figures, their countercultural energy. They speak of free will as light against the shadows of society’s dogmas, and a refusal to submit to fear and control. » - TZ
