Three years after the formation of Duo Gaitar, harmonica player Rutger Mathys and guitarist Marijn van der Linden released their self-titled debut album. In their early years, they steadily worked on building their live reputation, performing at venues such as North Sea Jazz and LantarenVenster in the Netherlands, while also gracing stages in Belgium, including the Brussels Jazz Festival at Flagey.
The roots of Duo Gaitar are in jazz, but their musical journey also embraces Brazilian music and chanson. They present original compositions with one central theme: a deep love for the song. They focus on simple, heartfelt melodies that go straight to the heart—especially when they can explore them through improvisation.
Alongside intimate ballads, up-tempo Latin grooves, and swinging waltzes, the album also includes two covers, including the ultimate song: Randy Newman's You’ve Got a Friend in Me.
The album was released on May 3, 2024. On the same day, Rutger appeared on radio Klara's Music Matters segment as part of De Twintigers. The broadcast also featured live recordings of Duo Gaitar, and the full concert can be rewatched via VRT MAX or YouTube.
