Nathan Surquin

Nathan Surquin is a Belgian trombonist. He began his musical studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under the guidance of Phil Abraham, before continuing his training in the Netherlands at Codarts, University of the Arts in Rotterdam. He earned his master’s degree there in 2019, studying with renowned trombonists Ilja Reijngoud, Bert Boeren, and Andy Hunter, who deeply influenced his approach to the instrument and helped him refine his playing.

Highly active on the Belgian and Dutch jazz scenes, Nathan quickly established himself as a sought-after trombonist. He has performed with several prestigious ensembles, including the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (Netherlands), the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orchestra, and the Jazz Station Big Band.

Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to work with leading figures in jazz and contemporary music. He has collaborated with Aka Moon (on the album Quality of Joy), joined the trombone ensemble led by Nabou Claerhout—bringing together a new generation of trombonists from across Europe—and shared the stage with soloists such as David Linx and Philippe Thuriot.

As a regular member of the Loek van den Berg Quintet (Netherlands), he has taken part in several international tours in India, Spain, Turkey, and Malta, and continues to perform across the Netherlands in support of the group’s second album, Seafarer.

In parallel, Nathan is involved in numerous projects as a sideman, ranging from large-scale productions—such as with the French hip-hop collective Chinese Man—to more intimate groups like Ozain 4tet, with whom he has recorded two albums. His career has led him to perform in some of Europe’s most iconic jazz venues, including Flagey, Bimhuis, Paradox Tilburg, Lantarenvenster, Sounds Jazz Club, Jazz Station, and Hnita Jazz Club, reflecting his dynamic, versatile presence on stage.

Nathan’s musical approach is guided by listening, exchange, and a continuous pursuit of freedom of expression. He seeks to push stylistic boundaries and explore new sonic landscapes, both as a performer and composer. His trombone playing, both fluid and expressive, blends subtle melodic lines with bold improvisations.

Today, in addition to his collaborations, Nathan is developing his own artistic projects. He is currently forming his own quartet, with the aim of exploring his personal musical universe and creating a dialogue between genres, influences, and cultures.
