Alexi Tuomarila

Started playing piano at the age of 4, with the Suzuki Method and went to study classical piano at the Espoo Music Academy, Finland ('80-'92).
  • Studied at the Oulunkyla Pop & Jazz Conservatory of Helsinki, Finland ('93-'94).
  • Left Finland in order to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Belgium, Departement of Jazz & Commercial Music ('94-'99), Studied with pianists Diederik WISSELS and Nathalie LORIERS and obtained his Master of Music Degree in September 1999.


  • His quartet released "Voices of Pohjola" in 2001 and " 02" in 2003.


    PRIZES :
    • Won with his Quartet the "10th European Jazz Contest" in Avignon, France, 2001
    • Won the 1st prize at the "3rd International Jazz Soloist Competition" in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in 2001
    • Won prize for the best soloist at the "21st International Jazz Contest" in Hoeilaart, Belgium, in 1999
    • Won 1st prize with his Quartet at the "21st International Jazz Contest" in Hoeilaart, Belgium, in 1999
    • Won the Belgian Artistic Promotion Prize (Sabam), for the best improvisation of a Belgian composition, at the "19th International Jazz Contest" in Hoeilaart, Belgium, in 1997
    • Won prize of the most promising young group at the "19th International Jazz Contest" in Hoeilaart, Belgium, in 1997
    • Won 2nd Prize at the "National Composition Contest for Young Musicians" in Finland, in 1993

    Main focus is on the Alexi TUOMARILA Quartet, with several International Jazz Festival performances such as:
