Born in Belgium to a family of Italian origin, Michelino Bisceglia was introduced to music very early in his life by his older brother. Although he began playing the keyboard at the age of 6, his formal training on classical piano only started when he was already 12 years old. A few years later he switched to modern piano, and by his second year in high school Michelino knew he wanted to dedicate his life to music. He began an intense daily practice regimen to reach his goal.
Early on in his development he was mostly influenced by Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano and Keith Jarrett. Meanwhile he also had access to the music of Mozart, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky, which strongly inspired his compositional and orchestral instincts. After a few years of extensive self- study he began working as a pianist, composer, arranger and conductor.
Musical Career
As a composer and musician he worked with jazz icons such as Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Toots Thielemans and Dewey Redman. He was also nominated twice as Best Belgian Musician of the year, in 1999 and 2002. A typical characteristic of Michel Bisceglia is working with artists outside the jazz world. His most notable coproduction in this regard was Jazz Works, released with the famous Belgian DJ Buscemi on Blue Note Records.
In 1997 Michel Bisceglia formed his own jazztrio, and to this date they still perform in their original line-up. During this period they recorded five studio albums and played on famous jazz festivals all over the world. The gained experience results in a wonderful group dynamics and a musical maturity which is reflected most by the wavelike motions that Werner Lauscher (upright bass) and Marc Léhan (drums) produce in their accompaniment. Because of this they offer pianist Michel Bisceglia the freedom to give free course to his sophisticated and expressive improvisations.
