Wouter Berlaen

Wouter BERLAEN studied classical piano in the Music Academy of Deinze from the age of 9 until he was 18 years, started to play bass guitar by himself at the age of 16 in parallel with other studies.

After graduating from those schools (1997) he went to the Royal Conservatory in Brussels to follow the bass lesson with Bart DE NOLF.
In 2002 he graduated from this school.

His versatile taste covers all kinds of music from funk, jazz, blues, rockabilly, fusion, latin & salsa ,...... to experimental stuff and dance music. This resulted in +/- 1400 concerts in Belgium , Holland, Luxemburg, Germany, France, Le Québec (Canada) etc..
He also had the opportunity to tour in Taiwan, playing with Chi-pin HSIEH and Kai-ya CHANG.
As a well-demanded electric and double-bass player he has been working free-lance with various jazz artists : Fabrice ALLEMAN, Michel BISCEGLIA, Frank VAGANEE, Paolo LOVERI, Erwin VANN, Laurent BLONDIAU, Marc GODFROID, Teun VERBRUGGEN, Bruno VANSINA...

With the Wannes PEREMANS Trio he ended up in the final of the International Jazz Contest of Hoeilaart in Belgium (8 jazzbands chosen out of 55 bands all over the world).

He is also a regular live and studio session bass player with various pop artists and played with Kevin ARMSTRONG (David Bowie , Youssou N'dour , Keziah Jones) and Ariff DURVESH (Sting , Nithin' Sawhney , Wendy & Lisa).
As a member of the VTM Bigband, he even had the opportunity to play with Chaka KHAN, Ali CAMPBELL (UB40) and Tony HADLEY (Spandau Ballet) - januari 2007
Further on he played on various singles and albums for various Flemish pop artists who signed with EMI music, VIRGIN, BMG/ARIOLA, ARCADE records, SONY music...etc.

Next to his career as a free-lance bass player in the Belgian pop scène, he regularly makes sidesteps into the local jazz scène. In October 2006 he released his own jazz'n dj project with Sylvain Luc and Lionel Beuvens: Alien Bitesize (signing Mogno records). .
