Laurent Barbier starts playing the saxophone at the age of 10. After several years of classical music lessons, he discovers jazz at 14 thanks to Olivier Stalon and Fred Delplancq at the music academy of Ciney. He then attends several summer courses and workshops about jazz music, including Jazz au Vert, organized by the Belgian association Les Lundis d'Hortense which is particularly decisive in his choice to become a professional saxophone player.
Laurent starts studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in September 2008. That enables him to meet musicians such as Fabrice Alleman, Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, or Steve Houben, who greatly influences him in his artistic direction.
In 2010, he wins the first prize of Jazz at Comblain-la-Tour competition with the "Evan Surya 4tet", which gives him the opportunity to play at this festival, and perform next to some big names like Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz or Aka Moon.
He then chooses to continue his musical studies at the "Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag" (Holland), where he has lessons with American saxophone and clarinet player John Ruocco.
Winner of the Dinant Jazz nights 2012 contest as a member of the "LG Jazz Collective", he is active on the Belgian and international scene (France, Holland, Luxemburg, Greece, Germany,…) with several other jazz bands, including his own Belgo-Italian quartet, the quintet of pianist Joachim Caffonnette, the Holland-based "Tricana trio", the French Big Band "The Big Nowhere", and also plays as a freelance musician.
