Steve Houben, the internationally renowned saxophonist from Liège, pass away

We have learnt of the death of the saxophonist, flautist and composer Steve Houben on Saturday 21 March 2026. He passed away at the age of 76, surrounded by his family.

Born into a family of musicians – his mother was a classical pianist and his father an amateur jazz musician – it was, however, Jacques Pelzer who introduced him to jazz.

After studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he founded, alongside Henri Pousseur, the Jazz Seminar at the Conservatoire de Liège, where he also served as director.

He played with legendary figures such as Chet Baker, Mike Stern, George Coleman, Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, Jon Eardley, Joe Newman, etc., as well as well-known musicians from the Belgian jazz scene: Charles Loos, Mauranne, Toots Thielemans, Michel Herr and many others.

Steve Houben, an open-minded, cultured and curious man, tackled numerous musical contexts and styles (jazz, fusion, classical music, world music, etc.) with remarkable talent and conviction.

His son, Greg Houben, announced his passing with this message:

‘“Il y a dans l’air une musique qui ne se résout pas, un peu de ciel qui s'est pris dans les doigts..” – Jacques Izoard

The family and loved ones are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Steve Houben, which occurred on 21 March, the first day of spring.

He will leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all those who crossed his path.'

A great man has passed away.

Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
