Brilliant triple bill to kick-off the release of ‘Lefto presents Jazz Cats Vol. 4’

This autumn sees the release of Volume 4 of the Jazz Cats album series, curated by Lefto (BE). In other words: the trusted compilation series that serves as a barometer of what’s happening in the contemporary Belgian jazz scene.

Anyone who takes a look at the tracklists of previous volumes will have consistently seen a glimpse of the future in them, with acts such as Tukan, Black Flower, BeraadGeslagen, ECHT! and Glass Museum all going on to break through to a wider audience. These compilations are also highly praised abroad. “The sheer stylistic breadth of the music is striking,” wrote the London Jazz Journal.

Kuna Maze Live Band

The Brussels-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Kuna Maze, aka Edouard Gilbert, creates a unique blend of jazz, nu-jazz, broken beat and house. Inspired by the thriving British jazz scene, he takes jazz as his starting point and combines it with genres such as house and dub, experimenting freely and pushing boundaries. Despite these wide-ranging influences, his music remains cohesive and recognisable.

Although Kuna Maze usually composes and produces solo, he performs live with a band. Humo, in a **** review of his album *Layers* (2025): “Rich jazz-funk that gets our testosterone pumping”, as well as: “If we hadn’t done our homework, you could have had us believing this bloke was the new hip sensation from New York”.

ᖴOᑌTᒪOOᔕ

ᖴOᑌTᒪOOᔕ is an instrumental trio comprising violist Esther Coorevits (Nemø ensemble, Tourist LeMC), bassist Jonas Bruyneel (momoyo, Philemon) and drummer Renaud Debruyne (Ronny Wondr, Mirek Coutigny). With ᖴOᑌTᒪOOᔕ, atmospheric viola improvisations blend beautifully with funky basslines and challenging grooves.

Expect surprising chord progressions, daring tempo changes and a refreshing sound that pushes the boundaries of genres. Incidentally, the band’s name is spelled perfectly – unlike song titles such as ‘Verduaalpaal’, ‘Gevaarluk’, ‘Stormagtig’ or ‘Leevendig’.

Lupo Spaccaro

Behind the fictional character Lupo Spaccaro (BE) lies multi-instrumentalist Pierre Spataro, who is also a co-founder of Commander Spoon and known for his collaborations with artists including Reinel Bakole and Kuna Maze. With his eponymous debut EP, *Lupo Spaccaro*, he is now stepping out of the shadows.

He receives strong musical support from, amongst others, Shungu on production, Jeremy Debuysschere (Jean-Paul Groove) on bass and Lorenzo Ola Kobina (Commander Spoon) on keys. Musically, he describes his sound as “blending electronic galaxies and hip-hop with futuristic funk and transcendent jazz” and as a combination of “the intergalactic jazz explorations of Sun Ra whilst echoing the futuristic sounds of Big Dada, Warp and Brainfeeder”.
