Habibi Beats, a musical collaboration between B’net Chaabi and Think of One
Habibi Beats brings together musicians from the B’net Chaabi collective and Think of One through their shared love of chaabi music. Rooted in rhythm, repetition and trance, this musical project explores the collective and emotional power of chaabi, in which habibi — love — takes centre stage. Chaabi is a musical genre that stems from Moroccan folk traditions.
During their residency at Rataplan, both groups will blend their musical worlds together. In chaabi music, women often play a central role, passing on the repertoire and musical knowledge from generation to generation. B’net Chaabi brings this traditional chaabi repertoire to life, creating an unexpected yet exciting contrast with the rebellious sound of Think of One.
The Antwerp-based band Think of One is known for its experimental and adventurous sounds. Think of One draws inspiration from a wide range of international influences, from Inuit throat singing and Viennese waltzes to Brazilian rhythms, as well as Gnawa and Chaabi.
On the Rataplan stage, heritage and innovation merge into a compelling musical experience full of enchanting rhythms, raw poetry and a powerful collective energy. Discover the unifying power of chaabi during this concert.
We’re kicking off the new season at Rataplan with this festive evening. Before the concert, we’ll be screening a short film by Laïla Amezian and Hélène Sechehaye, which explores the tradition of chaabi music as it’s practised in Brussels. Welcome, habibi!
Habibi Beats was developed as part of TerraNova – Reclaiming Heritage, Shaping New Sounds, with support from the Flemish Government – Supra-local project grant.
