A solo piano concert full of cinematic, tender jazz in the intimate setting of the Academiezaal
Improvisation – virtuosic – intimate – intense
Few Belgians have earned as much praise abroad as Alex Koo. In Germany, Jazzthetik has described him as impossible to categorise; in the Netherlands, Trouw praised him as a pianist “of the same exceptional calibre as Keith Jarrett”; and in the United States, two of his albums have already been selected among the “Best Albums of the Year” by leading DownBeat Magazine, an international benchmark in the jazz world. Even the BBC simply called his music “gorgeous”.
The youngest son of a Japanese mother and a father from West Flanders, he started playing piano at the age of five as a classical child prodigy. Since then, he has received glowing praise from jazz icons including Kurt Elling, Kenny Werner and Brad Mehldau.
He studied in Amsterdam, Copenhagen and New York, received a Fulbright Scholarship, among other distinctions, and today teaches jazz piano as a principal subject at LUCA School of Arts in Leuven.
His music is cinematic, tender, unpredictable and energetic, yet always unmistakably his own.
For this unique concert, he will perform solo piano repertoire at the Academiezaal.
Before and after the concert, the DJs from Jazz Heks Sound System will spin the finest records from their collection at culture café de Fwajee.
A drink is included with your ticket.
