Artan Buleshkaj presents his new solo programme inspired by his hero, Thelonious Monk.
Thelonious Monk was the ultimate architect of jazz: a man of angular logic, daring silences and an inimitable rhythmic instinct. Guitarist Artan Buleshkaj — a musician who is usually just as at home in the avant-garde intensity of Anemic Cinema as in the subtle textures of mòs ensemble — returns to the absolute essence in this solo programme. No pedals. No effects. No compromises. In a world of digital texture, Buleshkaj opts for the raw truth of the guitar. He strips Monk’s iconic oeuvre down to the bone. Monk’s percussive piano touch finds a new life on the guitar strings, making the dissonant beauty of his compositions very tangible. It is a daring exercise in restraint, in which every note and every pause is given the space to breathe.
