Balkavik was born in 2021 from the unbridled imagination of Brussels-based pianist and composer Victor Abel – founder of the group "Ananké" twenty years earlier – and his three musical partners: Frédéric Gairard on violin, Romain Karsenty on accordion, and Antoine Maes on double bass.
Inspired by Transylvanian, Moldovan, and Bulgarian suites gleaned from their travels – as well as their diverse influences, from jazz to funk, from swing to musette – the quartet offers an energizing blend of instrumental music, a mix of tenderness and virtuosity, tradition and fusion.
A dreamlike universe and cinematic music where Tim Burton and Emir Kusturica meet, frenetic dances and off-kilter rhythms, strong spirits and gentle madness…
