Lorenzo Di Maio stands out for his subtle style, blending jazz, rock and film music. Influenced by artists such as Aaron Parks and Pat Metheny, he has developed a lyrical and ethereal approach to the guitar. He collaborates with numerous renowned musicians, including Ben Wendel, Eric Legnini, Jean-Paul Estiévenart and Antoine Pierre. Active in several projects, he plays with Next.Ape, the Boris Schmidt Band and Martin Salemi Daylight. His album Black Rainbow (2016) marked his first recognition, followed by Arco (2021) and Ruby (2023), in which he further explores textures and orchestration. In 2019, he received the Sabam Jazz Award, cementing his influence on the Belgian jazz scene.

‘RUBY’ is the project that currently best embodies the personality of guitarist Lorenzo Di Maio, who is always in search of new, lyrical flights of fancy. In this bass-less quartet, the Saint-Ghislain native brings the synthesiser to the fore. Whether a Moog or a Prophet, this venerable machine provides the bass line whilst adding its strong presence and sonic palette, creating atmospheres over which the guitar—and the piano—can unfold. The piano may also be an electric Fender Rhodes. Suffice to say that, with “RUBY”, there’s electricity in the air!

With his assured sense of melody and composition, Lorenzo Di Maio works with sounds like a sculptor with clay, shaping them in ways that are both seductive and thought-provoking.

With its broad ‘fusion’ approach, ‘RUBY’ combines the power of rock with the freedom of jazz, making this music particularly powerful when performed live. All the more reason not to miss ‘RUBY’ when they’re in the area.

With ‘RUBY’, Lorenzo Di Maio continues his musical journey towards something more eclectic and contrasting.

Whilst retaining a distinct taste for melodic compositions, he enjoys blending genres with this new, versatile quartet.

Comprising Lorenzo Di Maio on guitar, Wajdi Riahi on piano and Fender Rhodes, Cédric Raymond on Moog and Prophet, and Pierre Hurty on drums, RUBY is a confident patchwork of the guitarist’s varied influences, distilling music where delicate melodies alternate with virtuoso passages, where the natural coexists with the sophisticated, and where serenity rubs shoulders with visceral, organic energy.

Such is the music of RUBY: vivid and explosive!

The band’s distinctive feature lies in their pursuit of a unique aesthetic linked to the integration of synths into their sound.
