LUKE STEWART'S SILT TRIO: EXCLUSIEF BELGISCH CONCERT!

A casual observer of the Washington D.C. music scene could easily get the mistaken impression that there are four or five guys coincidentally named Luke Stewart playing leading roles in a disparate array of musical communities. In fact, Stewart is a singular, uncontainable artist whose work as a bassist, producer and all-around mover and shaker has deepened and extended the District’s legacy as a hotbed for creative music. Given his many pursuits, a single album can only capture a small portion of Stewart’s oceanic sonic continuum. He has an omnipresent and galvanizing force on the music scene and is known for the bands Heroes Are Gang Leaders, Irreversible Entanglements, Blacks’ Myths, Heart of the Ghost, and Remembrance Quintet. Founded in 2001, New York-based label Pi Recordings initially established its reputation with sensational albums by Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, and Steve Coleman. Over time, they released equally high-profile work by artists like Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey. With Luke Stewart, they once again spotlight significant talent. Stewart already has a rich resume thanks to his work with various groups, including Irreversible Entanglements, and collaborations with David Murray, Moor Mother, and Jamie Branch. "Unknown Rivers" is his Pi Recordings debut. The title refers to the constant evolution of rivers and their beds and silt layers—a natural mechanism of decay and creation. A natural mechanism of dismantling and creating. That is also the goal he sets forth through his music: to let new things emerge from the sediments of a musical heritage, emphasizing the dynamics of rhythmic patterns. After a few brief bursts of energy from the three members together, the way is cleared for tenor saxophonist Brian Settles, who meanders through the winding rhythms of his instrument. Trae Crudup is the trio's regular drummer, but Chad Taylor also joins the trio behind the drums. For the upcoming European tour, he presents Norwegian drummer Paal Nilsen Love, who needs no introduction on the Parazzar Stage. Paal is replacing Gerald Cleaver on this European tour due to visa issues.
