As every year, Leuven Jazz presents a series of theme combos by the jazz department of the LUCA School of Arts. Together with their teachers, the students develop a repertoire based on a specific theme or notable figure from the history of jazz.
With his students, bass teacher Jos Machtel explores the repertoire of American jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea (1941–2021).
Corea is widely regarded as one of the most influential pianists since Bill Evans, alongside Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner. As well as leading his own groups, such as Return to Forever and the Chick Corea Elektric Band, he has performed with Gary Burton, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughan, Avishai Cohen, and Stefano Bollani, to name a few. In 2020, he won his 23rd Grammy for the album Antidote with the Spanish Heart Band.
