Jazzathome huisconcert - Herak-Bulatkin quartet

Jazzathome huisconcert - Herak-Bulatkin quartet

The group's music reflects the shared Central European roots of both leaders. It is heavily influenced by Slavic and Gypsy folk music, as well as impressionist classical music and rhythms from the Balkans.

Dutch vibraphonist of Czechoslovak descent Miro Herak joins forces with leading Czech pianist Daniel Bulatkin in their brand new unique project Herak/Bulatkin Quartet. Here they are joined by a top rhythm section from the Netherlands - Johannes Fend (Austria, double bass) and Martin Hafizi (Bulgaria, drums).

Herak and Bulatkin's compositions bring together wild rhythms, lush soundscapes and strong memorable melodies. Combined with the special sound of the vibraphone, light electronics and the use of extended techniques on the double bass, this makes the Herak/Bulatkin Quartet one of the most interesting new acts on the European jazz scene.

The project has been selected to represent Czech jazz as part of the 2024 “Year of Czech Music,” in which the band has so far performed on stages around the world, including at the Tbilisi Jazz Festival, Jerusalem Jazz Festival and the Amersfoort World Jazz Festival. With upcoming performances at the prestigious Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea or at popular clubs in London, the band is set for a busy year. The group has also recorded 2 singles with master saxophonist Seamus Blake. The first is a composition The Simple Things for which Daniel Bulatkin received the “Best Czech Jazz Composition of 2024” award.
