Sonic Hug

Louise van den Heuvel is a versatile Dutch bassist. Her compositions and sound, invariably rooted in the contemporary electronic and jazz scene, are characterized by an idiosyncratic and creative use of modern music technology and effect pedals. Louise co-founded the electronic jazz trio Dishwasher_ — often praised as one of the most exciting new Belgian bands — and has worked (live) with renowned artists such as Zwangere Guy & Lander Gyselinck and Bruno Vansina in recent years. She is also part of the permanent line-ups of Stéphane Gallands' The Rhythm Hunters, The Gallands and the neo-soul group STACE.
For her brand new project Sonic Hug — born from a carte blanche by JazzLab and W.E.R.F. Records for their 30th anniversary in 2023 — Louise composed the entire repertoire herself. She then surrounded herself with some of the most interesting artists from the contemporary (jazz) scene: Hendrik Lasure on keys, Daniel Jonkers on drums and Sam Comerford on sax and clarinet (live replaced by Werend Van Den Bossche). The quartet went to record with producer Koen Gisen (cfr. An Pierlé, Dans Dans, Bony King, …). The band will go on a JazzLab tour in April and May 2024, after the album release on April 5, 2024 via W.E.R.F. Records.
Sonic Hug brings layered, melancholic songs full of elegant grooves, crystal clear vocals and experimental jazz excursions. Louise uses her own musical voice in a completely unique way — even literally, because on some songs you can hear her sing (for the first time!). ‍Together with three equally prominent names from the latest Belgian jazz generation (known from acts such as schntzl, Bombataz, Profound Observer, Otto Kintet, Dishwasher_, Kin Gajo, ...) Louise created a personal and intriguing musical story. Influenced by the sounds of music from Scandinavia and artists such as ADHD, Nala Sinephro, Floating Points, Y Otis and Joni Mitchell, the vibe of Sonic Hug presents itself as ethereal, elegant, full of imagination and always looking for an inspiring groove.
