When, at the age of 20, Éric D’Agostino discovered Thelonious Monk, it was a shock. His music, raw, authentic and visceral, moves him. This giant of jazz, often misunderstood and rejected, plays off the beaten track, with a unique freedom, making people vibrate as much with his silence as with his notes. How did such a singular man, marginalized by his peers, become a legend?
In this concert-show, Éric D'Agostino in quartet with Paolo Loveri (guitar), Michel Mainil (sax), Patrick Wante (drums) dives into Monk's universe: his doubts, his genius, his chaos and his silence, but also the unwavering love of Nellie, his companion and her unwavering support. Through this story of tenacity, faith and creation, he pays homage to Monk, mirror of his own challenges, and to those who, in the shadows, support and enlighten artists.
It is an ode to hope, unconditional love and the courage to be yourself in the face of obstacles. Monk is risk, art brut, chaos and infinity.
In the space of a text, Éric D’Agostino strives to give back to him what he gave him: faith in art and in life.
