Rabih Abou-Khalil is a master of the oud. He has been playing for 40 years and is one of Germany's best-known jazz musicians.
The 20 CDs he has recorded are masterpieces in the collections of many music lovers, veritable icons of style - both musically and visually! His concerts are magnificent, highly virtuosic highlights of world music, countless festivals and concert tours. In 2020, after a long wait, his album 'The Flood and the Fate of the Fish' was released by enja records.
Rabih Abou-Khalil is a border-crosser between the worlds of traditional Arabic music and European classical music, right through to open jazz. Like a traveller between cultures, this Lebanese-born oud virtuoso and composer, now living in France after a long stay in Germany, combines Arab, European and American music in a highly intelligent blend, far removed from any world music fad. Without prejudice, with a keen mind, great skill in playing and composing and a good dose of humour, he succeeds in an exceptional way in fusing often opposing worlds. He has surrounded himself with great names from the world of jazz, such as Charlie Mariano, Kenny Wheeler and Joachim Kühn, as well as the classics: the Ensemble Modern, the Balanescu Quartet, the Kronos Quartett and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. His work has been so successful that he has won the Jazz Award five times in one year; in 2002, he was awarded an honorary diploma at the German Record Critics' Prize for his body of work.
His complex compositions combine Arabic metrics and tone scales with pronounced improvisations. The result is fresh music of fascinating complexity, exhilarating virtuosity and great sensuality.
