Ripspiqué Lier presenteert Philippe Catherine Trio

Ripspiqué is extremely honored to once again present one of the absolute top musicians of European jazz: Philip Catherine, 4 years after his previous performance with us.

Following in the footsteps of that other legendary Belgian jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt, Philip learned to play the guitar. He soon played with Stéphane Grappelli of the Hot Club de France, accompanied world top players such as Charles Mingus, Benny Goodman, Toots Thielemans, Charlie Mariano and Chet Baker, and formed a duo with Larry Coryell. He played in almost all jazz temples in the world and received a series of important prizes for his virtuosity as a guitarist and composer, such as the Django D'Or as best European jazz musician.

In 2022, Philip celebrated his 80th birthday with a series of sold-out concerts and 2 albums: “Pourquoi”, with Paulo Morello and Sven Faller, and “75 – Live at Flagey”, a selection from his highly praised birthday concert from 5 years earlier. And he continues to delight his worldwide fan base even further with his characteristic swinging guitar playing and lyrical compositions. Unlike many other guitar virtuosos, the always modest Philip Catherine will never show off with gratuitous technical demonstrations. He prefers to concentrate on purity of sound, intensity of improvisations and close interplay with his musicians: Nicola Andrioli on piano and Bart De Nolf on double bass.
