BIOLUMINUS: ADA RAVE – AARON LUMLEY – ONNO GOVAERT

With their self-titled release, out on Doek RAW, Amsterdam-based trio Bioluminus sparked some raving reviews at Allaboutjazz.com, JazzNu and Nieuwe Noten, describing their music as “having a similar momentum as an Evan Parker performance” and labeling the group “a contemporary gem”.

Bioluminus is indeed a combustion machine of musical ideas and interaction, featuring the Argentinian tenor saxophonist Ada Rave, Canadian double bass player Aaron Lumley and the Dutch drummer Onno Govaert, three key players of the Amsterdam scene. Rave’s tenor playing has always boasted a voluminous tone and great control over extended techniques, but this trio allows her to emphasize her melodic and harmonically based playing which is full of grit and vigor, to say nothing of the rhythmic interplay between her, Lumley and Govaert. This could be called energy music, but just as fittingly be described as deep listening music.

AUDREY LAURO – LUIS LOPES – TOM MALMENDIER

The coming together of Audrey Lauro, Luis Lopes and Tom Malmendier, is a brand new chapter in the respective artists’ career. Having all connected individually at some point in recent years, this is their first collaboration as a trio.

French alto saxophonist Lauro has been a steady force in the Brussels’ creative music scene for two decades, playing in bands like Lauroshilau, La Nuée, Dark Ballads, C-IME and performing alongside artists such as Steve Noble, Lia Kohl, Ken Vandermark, Alison Blunt and Maggie Nichols. Her adventurous alto playing perfectly matches Lopes’ unhibited guitar style. Known for his work the European/American Humanization 4tet, his Lisbon Berlin Trio and the colourful quartet Bonbon Flamme, Lopes continues to make an impression with his tremendous electric sound. Drummer Tom Malmendier from Liège has been on stages all accross Europe, including the Météo and Music Unlimited festivals. His projects include Les Marquises (his duo with Emilie Škrijelj) and collaborations with Mike Ladd and Fred Frith.
