LINE-UP:

19:00 Wajdi Riahi Trio

20:45 Oded Tzúr

22:30 Harold López-Nussa Quartet

The three musicians Wajdi Riahi (piano), Basile Rahola (double bass) and Pierre Hurty (drums) – symbolize the rich Brussels jazz scene with its many influences. Their album Mhamdeya was released in 2022, which tells part of Wajdi's life with its compelling songs. Mhamdeya, the name of the Tunisian city where Wajdi grew up and inspired his music, brings a mix of fun and nostalgia. The honesty with which the pianist has captured his story, through rhythms, melodies and harmonies, is gripping and fully expressed live with the band. Wajdi Riahi shows enormous sensitivity, ingenuity and musical flexibility and is seen by experts as one of our greater talents.

Major jazz talent Oded Tzúr is part of a new generation of Israeli musicians who are enjoying great success in the New York jazz scene. With his warm tone, the tenor saxophonist mixes blues, Indian ragas, Jewish prayers and classical music into a universal language and is unmistakably reminiscent of John Coltrane. He is praised for his narrative conversions, his unprecedented instrument control and his special technique for 'gliding' between the different notes. Oded Tzúr comes to Harelbeke with top musicians who excel in timing, rhythm, technique and musicality. All are exponents of a brilliant generation of musicians. Nitai Hershkovits was pianist for Avishai Cohen for many years and bassist Petros Klampanis plays with Arooj Aftab, Anoushka Shankar and Snarky Puppy. Drummer Otis Brown III played with Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding and Terence Blanchard. The mutual magic of the four musicians is the basis for 'a new type of swing'. All masters of their instrument. Together we form a very close, strong bond. Isabella was published last year. The album is a musical love letter and is now his fourth album as a leader and the second on ECM. A real gem that scored very high at The Guardian & Jazz Wise (best albums of 2022) and All About Jazz (Best Album 2022). Can be seen at our Northern neighbors at Transition Festival and North Sea Jazz and at De Jazzontspooring.

Walk the streets of Havana on any day and you will hear the soul of Cuba: music pouring from homes and busy restaurants, windows rattling from the parties held indoors, nightclubs with throngs of people dancing. Pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa succeeds in capturing that exciting sensation with an exciting marriage of jazz and Cuban pop music. It is the flammable mix of Afro-Cuban and modern jazz, richly supplemented with rhythms from reggaeton, swinging mambo and Songo influences that characterizes his music.

López-Nussas's career spans multiple styles. From his recording of Hector Villa-Lobos' Fourth Piano Concerto with Cuba's National Symphony Orchestra to his leading role in Ninety Miles, both a jazz album and a film documentary, recorded in Havana with jazz stars David Sánchez, Christian Scott and Stefon Harris. He has since released nine albums with beautiful classical pieces, enchanting solo creations and explosive jazz trios. His new album Timba a la Americana will be released in August. His first on the legendary Blue Note label. His quartet is supplemented by bassist Luques Curtis and his brother Ruy Adrián López-Nussa on drums, but also by harmonica player Grégoire Maret, who, in addition to a Grammy Award, has collaborations with greats such as Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Tito Puente or Prince and Sting on his resume. to make. Herbie Hancock called Maret “one of the most creative musicians around”. At De Jazzontspooring they present new music. Warm up those dancing legs!
